Happiness or Joy?

Is there a difference between happiness and joy?

Some people have strong feelings about this.

What do you think?

My sense is that joy feels deeper, more internal, less accidental and less dependent on external factors.

“Joy seems to me a step beyond happiness—happiness is a sort of atmosphere you can live in sometimes when you’re lucky. Joy is a light that fills you with hope and faith and love.” - Adela Rogers St. Johns

The word happy comes from the same root as happen and happenstance, so it may seem like happiness just happens to you.

The word joy is associated with rejoicing and a deep inner gladness that we consciously open ourselves to.

Some people define joy as a very intense happiness. Some people define joy as the source of happiness.

Have you noticed you can experience deep joy even in times of deep grieving?

Joy and sorrow are not opposites- our hearts can mature into the ability to hold both. You can choose to be nourished by joy even in times of deep grieving.

“For happiness one needs security, but joy can spring like a flower even from the cliffs of despair.” ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Kindle the light and power of joy and you develop a strength for yourself and for those around you - even in dark times.
