Several years ago at a Hay House conference another author and I were talking about how challenging it is for many people to take great care of themselves.
She remarked, “You can always tell if a woman is practicing self care by looking at her nails. Is she regularly getting manicures and pedicures?”
I resisted the impulse to hide my hands.
Although I admire the lovely nails of my friends and clients who prioritize trips to the nail salon, it is not on my list of the most important ways to take great care of myself.
Sitting still by a stream is restful, nourishing and rejuvenating for me. Sitting still in a nail salon is not.
Digging in the garden dirt, walking barefoot on the grass or in the stream may leave my hands and feet looking a bit shabby, but my body and soul thrive.
There is no one self care recipe that works for all of us. No one else can define what is the best self care for you.
Love a great mani and pedi? Fabulous. Enjoy. Just make sure your self care is not only focussed on your external self. Real self care goes way beyond looking good.
