"ALWAYS? REALLY?!" Game-changing Word Swap #3

Your brain is plastic.

So is mine.

That’s great news!

Brain plasticity means your brain - as well as the body it is connected with! - has an extraordinary capacity to learn, grow, heal and change - at every age.

Not such great news: Most of us have not been taught that we can activate this natural capacity for extraordinary change and healing.

And even if we do believe change and healing are possible we may think it’s going to take years of hard work.”

Great news: It does not have to be hard, it does not need to take a long time.

One simple and powerful way you can activate positive change today:

Kindly Notice when you use the word ALWAYS.

Are you using “ always” to describe habits, attitudes, actions etc that you actually do not want to continue?

Odd as it may seem, most of us do this sometimes.

Like:

  • “I always say yes even when I want to say no.”

  • “I always overeat in the evening.”

  • “I always worry.”

🌟 These statements send a powerful message of intention to your brain. By using the word “always” you’re hypnotizing yourself to keep doing this thing that you don’t really want to keep doing.

These “ Always” statements are often followed by support or justification such as: “That’s just how I am/ always have been” or “That’s just my personality/ my nature/ my family pattern. “

Examples:

  • “I always put other people’s needs ahead of my own needs …that’s how my mom was and how I have always been and I guess I’ll always be that way.”

  • “I always say yes even when I don't want to do something … that’s just my nature.”

  • “I always go into debt at the holidays… I just can’t stop myself.”

  • “ I always eat well during the day and then eat way too much sugary food at night …it’s impossible to stop myself.”

  • “I always get anxious and lose sleep worrying about what might happen to people I love … it’s my personality to be a worrier.”

Remember: Your patterns can change- even if you’ve had them for decades. Your brain can change. It has the ability to change and grow and you can re-wire your brain to change old habits and patterns that no longer serve you.

Even though re-wiring your brain might sound complicated — you are actually doing just that by choosing words that open you to what you really want to create.

Begin rewiring your brain today with this word play:

** Think of a pattern or habit in your life you would like to shift.

** Play with saying:

I used to (old way of being) and now I have new awareness and new skills. I am beginning to change (outworn habit / pattern) and I am becoming (healthier and happier and more successful at reaching my goals.)

EXAMPLE:

“I used to say yes even when I didn’t want to. Now I have new awareness and I’m learning new patterns so I can feel safe saying no.”

Try writing one yourself :

“I used to __________ and now I have new awareness and new skills I am using to change _____________ and I am becoming ___________________________.”

“We are wired to heal, to right ourselves, to grow and transform. This is not just a metaphor. It is what neuroplasticity is about.” ~ Hilary Jacobs Hendel
